RESEARCH GRANTS.

REINSTATEMENT REQUESTED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. A deputation from the New' Zealand Institute this morning requested the Minister /of Internal Affairs to reinstate the research grants formerly made to the institute but discontinued as a post-war measure of economy. The deputation received a sympathetic reply from the Minister, who promised to try to induce Cabinet to accede to the institute’s, request. Dr. P. Marshall (president of the institute), Professor lvirk, Professor* Easterfield, Dr. Cockayne, and the Hon. G. J. Thomson stressed the value of research work. Professor Kirk said that for one "''thing research into tho question of insulators had meant a saving of £IO,OOO a year to New Zealand alone. The Hon. Mr. Thomson spoke of the research being carried out by liis son with respect to crustaceans, which was thought might be of some uso. Dr. Cockayne said tho improvement of pastures was one of the matters receiving attention. The Hon. Mr. Bolland said he hoped that when the matter had gone before Cabinet, and its decision was announced, that the institute would be surprised rather than disappointed at the liberality shown, for lie knew rim the members ol Cabinet were sympathetic, too
