NURSERY MATTERS.
MEETINGS IN AUCKLAND PROVINCE Mr T. D. Lennie, president, and Mr Geo. A. Green, secretary, of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen, returned to Palmerston North to-day from an official visit to the Auckland district. Mr Green told a “Standard” reporter that meetings attended by representative business and professional men, as well as by members of the trade, had been held at Auckland and Hamilton. Support had been accorded the association’s propaganda in connection with the need for afforestation but opposition had been expressed to the State’s competition in the sale of small lots for hedge and shelter purposes. The various items in the nurserymen’s programme were dealt with at the meetings, including the production of varieties, bud selection, plant quarantine (in a modified form), the Institute of Horticulture, mass production of leading lines, and were accorded the fullest support. Great interest was taken by the chairman and engineer of the Central Electric Rower Board in the matter of the strict supervision of hardwood poles entering the country, in order that pests might be excluded.
