THE LABOUR MARKET.
RETURNS FOR JANUARY. For the month of January, ending to-day, 26 applications for employment have so far been received at the Government Labour bureau in Palmerston North. Of the 26 applicants, 17 were assisted to employment, most of them being sent out to undertakings in the district, including the Manawatu Gorge road improvement works. It was stated at the bureau that, locally, there was not a great deal of work offering, but indications were not lacking that the labour market shows a considerable improvement.
