SHOT DEAD IN STREET.
FORMER LEGISLATOR’S END. TRAGEDY IN BRISBANE. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received January 30, 11.20 a.m. BRISBANE, Jan. 30. Mr A. E. Whitford, formerly member for Burrum in the Legislative Assembly, Avho AVas defeated in 1922, was shot dead outside the Tivoli Theatre. An eye-witness states that a man and a woman wore on one side of the road engaged in an argument Avhan the man crossed the street and shot Whitford tivice in the chest. He then fired three more shots at the body as it lay prostrate on the ground, saying: “I think this will settle you.” After the shooting the fnan threw away the revolver and ran. The police chased and captured him. The cause of the shooting has not been disclosed, but Vheu arrested the man, Avhose name was given as James Laydon, made a remark which indicated that it Avas the outcome of a domestic matter.—Press Association.
