Great storms have been sweeping the Atlantic fdf the past fortnight, and numbers of steamer's hate suffered damage., The British sfearner Westmoreland, with a Crew of 80, sent out a S,O,S. message ofi MondaV night, asking that help be sent quickly as the lifeboats had been Washed away. . The ship has not reported since and the worst is feared. The North Atlantic cOast has beep visited by one of the worst storms on record in recent years, causing idtich damage to property and loss: of We, the extbnt of which has not yet been determined. Sea walls have been washed away, piers ■ ripped apart, houses along the shores damaged and roadways washed out Under the influence of a 48 hours’ downpour, combined with an 80-toile gale, the schooner McDonald foundered. The crew was rescued. , The steamer Maracaibo, as well as 10 smaller vessels, came into port badly damaged.—A. and N.Z. cable.
