ACCIDENT TO BOY CYCLIST.

3BBIOUB INJURIES SUSTAINED.

A serious accident occurred in College street, near West End school, shortly fore 4 p.m. yesterday, when Clifford Hopwell, aged 12J- years, whose parents reside in Clifton street, was crushed by one of the rear wheels of a heavy lorry which passed over his abdomen inflicting serious injuries. The boy was riding a bicycle along College street, and, according to the police report of the accident, he seized hold of the side, of the lorry which, heavily laden with concrete pipes, was being driven by Albert Edward Madgwick for the owners, Messrs Leyland and Larsen. t The boy stopped pedalling, allowing the lorry to pull him along but, before he had proceeded very far, his cycle skidded ana he was thrown under tho' lorry, one of the rear wheels passing over his abdomen. The lorry driver pulled up at once. Itwas apparent that the boy was seriously injured and was at once conveyed to the Palmerston North hospital, where he now lies in a serious condition. On enquiry early this afternoon it was stated by the hospital authorities that the boy was still in a very grave condition.
