Captain W. R, Holmes, for 20 years commander of the cable steamer Ins, has retired on pension. Captain H. R. Hughes, chief officer, succeeds him.

The death occurred at the Wellington hospital on Sunday evening of Captain c. A. Bilton, late transport shipping o» lCer at Wellington. The late Captain Bilton was well-known in shipping circles during the war. He served in the New Zea and Shipping Company, and rose to the rank of chief officer in the Royal Mail Steamship Company at Southampton. Prior to coming to New Zealand he. was in command of one of the inter : island vessels trading in the West Indies.

Mr William Dixon Buddie, for 21 years a resident of "Waihi and formerly of Auckland y passed away on Sunday night in his 83rd year. Deceased, who had been ailing for some time, was a son of the late Rev. Thomas Buddie, one of our early dav missionaries, and brother of the late Mr Thomas Buddie, of the well-known Auckland legal firm of Messrs Buddie, Button and Co. For the greater part of his time he followed the profession of accountancy.
