FEAST OF DEATH.
HINDU PRIEST KILLED. MURDERED IN FIJI. An alleged murder has been reported from the Ba district, the victim, who was a Hindu priest, being hammered to death with an iron axle, in a home of a man who (says a Hava correspondent) had given a feast of honour to him as a distinguished guest. This man (Baibdin), it is alleged, had discovered that the priest had been interfering with his woman and craftily decided to do away with the Hadiiu. Ha gave a feast in bis house, and invited about a dozen of bis countrymen, the priest being the guest of honour. All went merrily and the revelry wai carried well into the night. All retired in the best of spirits. About midnight soma of the guests were awakened by a noise and found Salbdin savagely attacking the priest with the axle bar. smashing in the skull and killing him. Everything wa-s hushed up, and Saihdin had the temerity to report the death of the priest to the police as the insult of old age, and ask permission to bury him. Ho would have succeeded, but for one of his neighbours sending a message that it was a case of murder. On the constable visiting the house, ha found the body laid out ready for interment, and the mourners solemnly sitting round in silence.
Saibdin has been committed for trial,
