TARIFF REPRISAL.
‘JOLT” FOE THE U.S.A.
CANADA’S BUDGET,
VANCOUVER, May 29
The New York Tribune says that Canada has given the tariff framers of the United States ‘‘their worst jolt,” and one which is of a retaliatory nature.
“On every item on which the Canadian Government could conceive that the Canadian purchaser had a choice of buying from Britain or from the United States the duty on the article bought from Britain,” says the newspaper, “is reduced, while the duty on the article bought from lire United States remains the same.
“The whole lino of Canada’s drive on the tariff is not to'increase the cost of imported articles to the consumer, but to make the British-made article cheaper than at present.”
