RIGHTS OF A WIFE.
DECISION IN GREAT BRITAIN,
CANNOT BE LIBELLED BY HUSBAND.
Received May 18, 9,20 a.in. LONDON, Mav 17,
That a. wife cannot be libelled by her husband was the decision of the Recorder of the Central Criminal Court in ([Hashing an indictment against a husband for publishing a defamatory libel against his wife. The defence quoted a loading case on the subject, wherein it was held that a wife could not proceed against her husband for libel, as the libel might arise from angry passions and desire for revenge, which might lead to a breach of the peace. The Recorder commented: — C T suppose the Judge thought that passions might to be settled in the domestic forum. If a man hits his wife, she has a remedy; if he inflicts more severe injuries by writing libellous postcards, she has none.”—A. and N.Z. cable.
