SPORTING.

Describing the contest for the Wanganui Steeplechase yesterday, the Chronicle says: Omahu was at a. ridiculously short price, a bit better than evens. Coalition was second favourite, while there was plenty of money on hand for Sir Solo, Khartoum, Mauiahera, Sturdeo and First Line, with Kohu and War Loan paying good prices. The race itself was responsible for a line exhibition of jumping. Sir Solo was first away and showed the way over the first brush to Sturdee, Coalition, Khartoum, Omahu and Mauiahera and First Line last. Into the straight Omahu, Sir Solo, Maniahera, Khartoum was (he order, War Loan lying last. Round the back Mauiahera was_ in the lead, but as they came up the straight Sir Solo and Omahu were on terms, with the others following in this order: Mauiahera, Khartoum. Kohu and Coalition. At the second of the brush double Sir Solo faltered and went through the fence and fell. Mauiahera was again in front at the back, with Omahu, Khartoum, Kohu close up and Coalition further away. Across the top Kohu went to the front, but on the bend Khartoum was on terms, and with Omaha and Mauiahera following, Khartoum was first over the final obstacle, from Kohu, and finishing well bear Omahu by three and a-half lengths, with Kohu a neck away. Next to finish were Coalition, whose big weight told in the last half mile. War Loan, First Line and Sturdeo a long way buck. The win was a. very popular one. It is a pity Sir Solo fell—his only mistake —as ho was going remarkably well a mile from home. Mauiahera fell at- the lasi obstacle.

For the Century Hurdles Spook was the final favourite, carrying a bit more than Wbanoko (says the Chronicle). The order of iho others was Alteration. Poanui, Gamecock and Kyoto, with Gladful and levplover the outsiders. It was a good start, although Alteration was a bit slow in finding his feet. Poanui led Whanoko, Spook, Explorer, Gamecock, Alteration and Glaclful past the stands the’first lime. Explorer moving up and joining Whanoko along the back. The order into (he straight the speond time was Whanoko, Poanui, Explorer, Spook, Alteration and Gamecock. Going out of the straight Poanui went out. ahead, Whanoko catching up with him. Spook also making a forward move. At the half mile Poanui again drew away and turned into the straight, followed by Spook, Alteration and Whanoko, and this was how they finished, Poanui winning by four lengths from Spook, Alteration a couple of lengths away third. A long way back came Gladtul and Whanoko together, Explorer next and Gamecock last, Kyoto fell at the hurdle at the three furlongs the first time round.
