Professor Rankine has demonstrated telephoning by light. The transmission instrument, a photophone, has a gramophone sound box, a delicately poised mirror replacing the needle, the effect of light upon the element selenium causing the mirror to convey the sound oscillations received. Professor Rankine states that sunlight offers limitless opportunities for the transmission of speech, always allowing for the earth’s curvature.
