"PAY AS YOU LEAVE."
The attempts by the inter-urban tramwav corporations in.the Stale of New Jersey to put into effect the "pay as you leave" -/one system 'of fares has resulted in the complete disorganisation of the schedule of traffic, in grumbling, broken windows, hand-to-hand fights/- and general loss of temper by the passengers and tram crews. The New Jersey traffic law requires that vehicular traffic may not pqss a tram when passengers are alighting, so that in every lown long lines of trucks, wagons, and motor cars are tied up behind the trams; while t'lic conductors are busily ringing up the car fares on neat little cash registers and making change. .Many protestants against-the increased fares are taking advantage of the "pay a.-' you leave'' or "cafeteria" plan, as. it is nicknamed, to make a concerted rush past the conductor on arriving at their destination, and thus avoiding payment of. their faro. In cases where tho doors are kept shut to-prevent this method, rough ■ labourers do not hesitate to- put their feet through the car windows and to gain the street in'that manner.
