DOCTORED FIZZ. Seven Paris tradesmen have been convicted of selling as'champagne a mixture of ordinary white wine, nitric acid, and sugar. They were sentenced to penalties ranging from a £l2O fine and two years' imprisonment to a £4 find and three months' imprisonment. Said to have, defrauded his employers 6/ upwards of £IOOO by inventing nine workmen and drawing 1 wages in their names, Frederick William Badger. 46, a printer's overseer, was sentenced at the Old Bailey to 18 months' hard labour. Badger was receiving £5 5s a week wages, and counsel suggested that tho reason for tho fraud was that although married he was carrying on with two other women.

LUSITANIA MAY BE RAISED. Valuable and interesting experiments have, recently been carried out on the raising of a ship, tho S.s. Main- which was sunk by gunfire from a German submarine in Luco Bay, south of Scotland. The salvage operations were carried out by the Ardrossau Salvage Company, Glasgow, who undertook to tost some flexibl" pontoons, designed and manufactured by Messis Viekers, Limited. With a. little more experience _of these pontoons, the designers arc confident that they can be increased in size, and it will then become possible to tackle such largo ships as the Lusitania.
