HONOURS NOT TO BE BOUGHT. Australian-New Zealand Gable Association. LONDON, Nov. 1. Following on speeches in the House of Lords, wherein instances were cited of honours being granted or offered for subscriptions to party funds. Lord Curzon announced on behalf of the Government, that the reasons for the bestowal of honours would be definitely stated in future; also that the Premier, in recommending anyone for an honour would satisfy himself tliatno money transaction was connected therewith. An East African official message says; The Germans have been expelled from tire Mahcnge district, towards the Luwegu river They abandoned two guns. Colonel Northey’s troops have occupied Liwalc. The enemy’s losses in the recent lighting at Nyungao, apart from wounded, is estimated at 53 Europeans and 268 Askaris killed, and 241 Europeans and 677 Askaris taken prisoner. BRITISH PRISONERS IN TURKEY. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. LONDON, Oct. 31. In the House of Commons, Sir W. H. Hope said the conditions of British prisoners in Turkey ■were a- source of constant anxiety. No definite reply had been received' to a suggestion that English representatives should consult with the Turks. BRITAIN’S FOOD SUPPLY. Australian-New Zealand Cable Association LONDON, Oct. 31. A meeting of the wholesale meat traders of Smith field formed a central body to confer with the Government departments to protect the interests of the trade. Mr Boys (the New Zealander who has been appointed Director of -Meat Supplies) informed the meeting that organisation and administration would remain in the Government’s hands but executive action would be ieft at present with the traders. The nation required 40,000-tons of meat weekly. COMPULSORY RATIONING IF | NECESSARY. LONDON, Oct. 31. In the House of Commons, Air Bonar Law stated that Lord Rhondda would unhesitatingly recommend compulsory rationing if necessary. Air T. J. McPherson stated that London possessed guns able to effectively shell Zeppelins at their maximum height. THE DEVILISH HUN AGAIN. NEW~YOIIK, Oct. 31. A nation-wide plot to kill American soldiers by impregnating vaccine serum with tetanus germs, is believed to have been discovered, following on five mysterious deaths in a cantonment. SINN FEIN LEADERS IMPRISONED LONDON, Oct. 31. Two Cork Sinn Fein leaders have been incarcerated for participation in a . recent demonstration, when a thousand I volunteers paraded.
