The Daily Telegraph's Pctrograd correspondent says according to Russian newspapers the town of Wenden was the scene of a ghastly massacre of Germans during the Russian retreat from Riga. While the last detachments were traversing the town the rumour spread that the German residents were firing at and bombing the troops from their windows, whereupon the _ rioters, who were mostly civilians, systematically attacked the German houses, and exterminated every German, not sparing either women or children. The rabble committed _ every imaginable outrage. The town during the orgies was under a heavy bombardment by the Germans on the one hand, and the Russians on the other. The Germans used ga.s shells, the poisonous fumes killing lioth the plunderers and their intended victims.
