THE OLD AND THE NEW.
Some of the pioneers of Manawatu may probably have some slight recollection from their wanderings in former years of what tho roads on the East Coast between, _ Masterton and Te Nui and Castlepoint were like a few decades ago, when vehicular traffic was almost impracticable for some months of the year. On a recent Saturday night, seven brilliantly-light-ed motor cars might have been seen following each other in procession along the Maimgapakeha Valley. What a contrast with the time when tho bullock dray was about the only vehicle likely to be met with, and the only one that could safely negotiate the quagmires and steep descents that barred all other wheeled traffio in those early days. The whole sceno has changed in the interval, owing to tho development of colonisation, and the eminently practical work done under much difficulty by the different governing bodies.
