A mail named Cowan was found dead in a Chinese camp at Cobar (N.S.W.) with his head badly battered. Two Chinese have been arrested. It is believed the tragedy is over a woman.
Owing to the unsettled 6tate df fi'fairs at Tonga, the Governor and High Commissioner, Sir Everard im Thurn, has departed for there from Suva in the s.s. Ranadi. A notorious Anatolian brigand named Tchakiryali, in the neighbourhood of Mirmarico, assassinated several peasants suspected of divulging his movements. The Government has sent a Circassian officer and a hundred volunteers to kill or capture him, A French aviator named Lerorestier was incinerated at Luelva (Spain) by his motor exploding during a fall of 250 feet. Garros, on his monoplane at St, Malo, attained a height of 13,700 ft. A collision occurred botween two freight trains at the docks at the junction of the Erie, U.S.A. Two passengers, a tramp and an engineer were killed and a number of employees seriously injured and passengers hurt. The President of the Illinois Central ' Railway has refused to meet the employees who demanded recognition of unions, and a srike is imminent. Mount Pavlolf, in the Aloutian Islands, is active. Smoko has been observed arising from the crater, and fine du6t fell 011 passing ships. Mr Joseph Chamberlain has been elected Vice-President of the Imperial Mission, whose policy is to promote Imperialistic ideas in the Empire, to emphasiso the benefits of solidarity in commerce and defence, and to direct the current of emigration towards the Overseas Dominions.
