FARMERS' UNION.
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Palmereton branch was held today. Mr J. Balsillie presided. Also present: —Messrs L. R. Bryant, H. J. A Barber, A. Harding, Capt. Hewitt, Alex. Farmer, A. Matheson, and J. Wingate. Notification was received from the Provincial Secretary that the annual Provincial Conference would be held ■at Marton on May 24th next, and that notices of motion for the. Conference order paper must be sent in before May 10th. The Dominion secretary forwarded reports of meetings held at Gieborne by the Gisborne branch of the Union, and the resolutions passed with reference to having Government grading of mutton exported from the Dominion in the same manner as butter, cheese and hemp are now graded. The Gisborne branch asked for views of farmers in this district. Several members spoke in favour of tho proposal. Mr Wingato was opposed to the proposal of Government graders for the meat. We wanted protection at Home. —After discussion the question was held over for a future meeting. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the branch on Saturday, April 23, when the election of officers and election of Conference- delegates will be held.
