ASHHURST.

On Wednesday afternoon was celebrated the marriage of Mr John A. Hart, youngest son of Mr Martin Hart, and Miss Rose Hart, eldest daughter of Mr R. Hart, of Richmond. The bride was most becomingly attired in a cream silk dress, with the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, and carried a lovely bouquet of Michaelmas daisies and white eosmus. She was attended by Miss .Connie Hart, who wore vyhitc, silk with a green hat! and little Emily Hart, who was dressed in blue velvet, and carried a basket of flowers. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. F. Mac Donald, and Mr Sam Hart was best man. After the ceremony a number of guests were entertained at afternoon, tea by the bridegroom's mother, when the usual toasts were duly honoured. The happy couple, carrying with them the best wishes of a large circle of friends, left on a visit to Hastings. The bridegroom's presents to the bridesmaids were a gold locket and gold brooches set with pearls and turquoise. At tho annual meeting of members of the library, the following committee was elected, viz.:—Mies Gudgeon, Messrs A. Harding, T. Lowes, P. Hanlon, J. 11. Paton. T. Hart, G. S. Rumble (president), P. _Green, 0. Buchler. G. Lovelock, and F. Veale (secretary). It was decided to close the public reading room for six months, owing to lack of funds. The

action of the committee in deciding to clo£e the reading ro.om to the public has oeen somewhat criticised, and remarks, some strong, others sarcastic, have flowed

pretty freely, the predominant opinion being that the public will recover from the shock, and that there will not be a mad rush to patent the latest idea for

popularising a library. A candid friend suggests that the committee should give some thought to such resolutions, as it is an open question whether by their action they have not disqualified the library from participation in any future subsidy from the Government. It is to be hoped this is not the case, and that the reading room will be open as per usual. Sections 46 to 49, 51, 54. 55, '57, Pohangina township, are to bo leased by public auction at the Lands Office at Wellington on April 27. They are small township allotments, the total area being 1 acre 3 roods 28 perches. Congratulations to Miss Lclia Pemberton, an ox-pupil of the local school, on having passed the first section of B.A.

The harvest festival service of the Church of England was held on Wednesday evening, the church being beautifully decorated. The service was taken by the Rev. Payne.

. At the Oroua County Council meeting yesterday Mr E. C. Green waited on the Council as a deputation and presented a petition from the settlers on the range in the Pohangina County, at the back of Mr Akers' property, requesting that their holdings be taken within the boundaries of the Oroua County. The matter is to receive the consideration of the Oroua Council, and in the meantime the chairman, Cr. G. Wheeler, and Cr. J. H. Vincent are to view the locality. There is likely to be litigation between the contractor and the local body in connection with tho settlement of accounts in the Gorge bridge.

Complaints were received at the Council meeting touching the extra royalty imposed by some property owners. Unless some satisfactory arrangements can be arrived at pits will be acquired under the Act provided for that purpose.
