DRAINAGE BOARDS.

MANAWATU. The usual meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held this morning. Present —Trustees Sanson (in the chair), Prouse, Garrity, "Voss, Collis, and Claw son. CORRESPONDENCE. From J. F. Clausen, in reference to clearing out drain on the Foxton Line and complaining that tho Mangaono was scouring.—The Board decided it had no jurisdiction in tho matter of the drain complained of, and the Engineer was asked to see to tho Mangaone scourlrjg. From E. J. Riddiford, asking that the Board clear out tho Karcrc road drain, as it was his only outlet; also stating he was clearing out tho drain on his own property.

From E. W. Collins (Newbury) asking that the Board clean out a small creek that runs through his land. It was not cleaned last year, and as it was the only outlet for a largo area of land above it was quite necessary that it should be seen to at once.—Received.

From John Russell, complaining that Hocking and Davey's contract was interfering with his fences, and asking that something be done.—Tho Engineer said the work was being done in a very unsatisfactory manner. —It, was decided to write Messrs Hocking and Davey, informing them of the complaint, and stating they must keep the fences intact and stockproof, and would be held responsible for all damage done. From John Jones, complaining that stop bank above his property had a gap in it, and needed repairing; also that there was erosion going on in the Mangaomv —Stop bank ro bo repaired. From J. B. Wither, on behalf of R A. McKenzie and E. Wood, asking that drains on No. 4 line and RongotcaLongburn roads be cleaned out.—Decided to inform applicants that the No. 4 line drain contracts have been let.

From J. Balsillie and J. Burmeistcr again calling attention to the fact that the Board had made no provision to cope with the flood waters in the Bunny-thorpc-Kairanga road drain, and reminding it of previous resolution to out away and level bank on the drain. Also from Bell, Gully, and Cooper, warning the Board against cutting and levelling the bank.—Decided not to do the work.

From J. B. Wither, on behalf of R. B. Knudsen, lessee and occupier of section in Kairanga Survey District, stating that the Boundary road drain had been recently cleaned out and the spoil therefrom thrown out on to his property on the edge of the drain, thereby depriving him of the use 'of his land for about six feet from the edge of the drain, also as the spoil chiefly consists of giant fescue, he was put to considerable expense in preventing it spreading all over his land, and asking for compensation.—The Board generally considered the spoil had to be put somewhere.

From the Railway Department, stating it was agreeable to granting £100 towards the alteration of the Foxton line drain, and to put larger pipes under the line, provided the Board would deepen the drain and undertake to carry out the work. —The Engineer produced a plan showing the complete alterations proposed.—lt was decided to accept the Government's offer. GENERAL. It was dccided to reinsure in the South British Accident office. Messrs Rcvcll and Hansen waited on the Board in reference to the deepening out of Hansen's drain.—A deputation of the Board was appointed.

Mr E. Wood waited on the Board and asked that the Rongotea road drain be eleaned out in front of his property. — The Board informed Mr Wood that to clean out the drain would accelerate the flow of flood water and injure settlers lower down.

Messrs Clicctham and Knight also waited on the Board and asked that the Taonui stream on the Rangitikei Line be cleaned out. OROUA. The ordinary meeting of the Oroua Drainage Board was held on Monday. There were present—Trustees J. Dalton (chairman), B. Gray, 11. Hunr, (7. Kendall, G. 11. Low. and J. Tennant. Correspondence was received 1 from J. Sanson offering a secrion for the Board's office for £20. It was decided to ask Mrs Duncan if she would sell the Board a part of section 56, fronting the Main road for a site for the Board's office, and pending her reply, further consideration of the matter was deferred.

Messrs R. R. Pearson and J. H. Claasen wrote objecting to the proposals of tho Manawatu C.C. with regard to the drainage of Tompkins' Line. Trustee Hunt reported that the Bank of New Zealand. Feilding, was willing to grant the Board an overdraft up to £1000.

It was decided to take out an accident insurance policy up to £500 to cover the present year. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with tho State Advances Board and ascertain if the £400 special flood damage loan was now available, and, if not, what further requirements were necessary to comply with the Act. It was decided to call tenders for widening, deepening, and improving the length of drain on Tompkins' Line between the culvert and Dalton Bros.' land, and that the Manawatu C.C. be asked to lower fhe culvert-

Tho Chairman reported that he had arranged with the contractor, Burgess, as to taking timber out of the crcek. Trustees Kendall and Tennant were authorised to pass work on No. 2 contract when completed. The following transfers were agreed to: —R. R. Sutton to J. Dennis, L. M. Sutton to 11. Jarvis, A. B. Sutton to J. Dennis.

Tenders will bo called for cleaning in all tho drains to bo cleared by the late Sluggish River and Horseshoe Drainage Board?, including the length of the Sluggish River from the main drain to the°old. boundary. A special meeting of the Board will be held to accept tenders.

Carroll Bros, were granted permission to clear those lengths of Cooper's and Greenaway's drain, tendered for at the same rate per chain as paid by the Board for the? balance of the work under similar conditions. MAKERUA. At the ordinary meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board there were presents—Trustees Greig E. Law, J. Liggins, and G. Seifert. A letter was received from Mr J. Liggins in reference to timber accumulations in the stream on his land. —It was decided to take no action. The consideration of the refusal to grant loans for drainage purpose was again dealt with, and it, was decided, "That renewed application be made for a provisional grant for a £2000 loan for the extension and additions to drainage in the eastern district as previously applied for ; and £1000 loan for improving Seifert's drain in the western district."

It was further decided, on the motion of Mr Greig. seconded by Mr Law: "That the engineer prepare a map showing the position of the Board's constructed drains and the drain to be constructed ; also the general fall of the country. It was resolved that the returning officer take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy caused by Trustee A. Seifert's absence. Notice is to be given to tho Makerua Estates Co. of the Board's intention to construct a continuation of the Tokomaru's main channel to its north branch in Mr Liggins' land.
