Tho Vatican authorities aro astounded that Mr Roosevelt published correspondence which they regarded as diplomatic documents. Mr Roosevelt's secretary, who is a Roman Catholic, interviewed Cardinal Merry Del Val. Tho latter for a guarantee that Mr Roosevelt would not visit tho Methodist Church in Rome, which Cardinal Merry Del Val stated was countenancing a most offensive campaign of caluminous detraction against
tho Pope. Mr Fairbank's (who was Vicc-President during Mr. Roosevelt's term) address to the Roman Methodists was the real cause of the Vatican's displeasure.
Received April 6, 8.25 a.m. ROME. April 5. The King and Queen of Italy banquottcd Mr Roosevelt and his family. Mr Roosevelt deposited wreaths on the tombs of Kings Victor Emanucl and Humbert in the Pantheon.
