INVERCARGILL, April 5. As a result of a protest on behalf of local mercantile firms the telephone deparement has agreed to continue the daily posting of debit notices for bureau connections on payment of a nominal fee of one penny per diem. The decision has_ bec.ri accepted with satisfaction by business" firms who thought that the discontinuance would have prevented all cheek of the use of telephones.
BLENHEIM, April 5. The Supreme Court sittings opened this morning before Judge Cooper. The calendar was light, comprising' only three charges against two persons, anil his Honor congratulated the district on its continued immunity from serious crime. True bills were found in the case of Walter Blatchford, theft, and William Barrow, assault on two girls. Blatchford was found not guilty and discharged.
WANGANUI, April .5. The Borough Gas Department made a profit last year of £2800 and the Municipal Opera' House of £353. The total receipts of; the latter were £996. The tramways just met expenditure, including interest and sinking fund. WELLINGTON, April 5. The New Zealand No-license Convention will bo held in Wellington on June 15. It is expected to be the most representative gathering of the kind ever held in the Dominion. The chief business will bo the consideration of the legislative proposals of the party, and to make preliminary arrangements for the poll next year.
Arrangements have been mnde by the Government for a display of New Zealand products, principally from the An-glo-Japanese Exhibition in London, at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industries Exhibition. It will be arranged by Mr C. Klette, of the AustroHungarian Consular Service, who has been some years in New Zealand.
