BOXING.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the contest at the Stadium, Sydney, between Summers, the English light-weight champion, and Douglas, of Australia, was full of incident. The fight was postponed until Friday week on account of the weather. The result was a draw. Douglas had the best of the first eight rounds, but was tiring towards the finish. "Snowy" Baker was referee. The verdict was said to be an admirable one.

The fact that Tommy Burns, exchampion pugilist, is trying hard to tempt Jack Johnson ; his coloured conqueror, to fight him again for an £8000 stake, brings into relief the champion negro's importance in the States. He is now the biggest man in the country, and has engaged a private secretary to conduct all his correspondence. ' Curiously enough, his private secretary turns out to be Mr W. Naughton, who,' besides being one of the recognised authorities on boxing in America, is a New Zealand boy (says a Southern exchange). He was the youngest son of Police Commissioner" Naughton, who ruled the police in the Auckland district about 40 years ago. He was apprenticed to the printing business at the office of the New Zealand Herald, and after serving his time, lit out for 'Frisco on his own. There hie passion for sport and his ability to write up his impressions soon brought him from the compositor's case to the reporting staff of one of the big dailies of the Golden Gate, and "W. W. Naughton in time blossomed into fame as sports editor, and became the recognised chronicler of fistiaiia. When W. W. Naughton went to America he met Peter Jackson and his sparring partner, Tom Lees, and undertook to pilot them through the States as their business manager. He was afterwards appointed sporting editor for the San Francisco Examiner.
