THE PURCHASE OF THE GAS WORKS.
BASIS OF NEGOTIATION REQUIRED.
The Borough Council was in receipt of a letter last night from the Gas Company stating the directors were willing to meet the Council in conference, but considered they should be advised upon what basis it was proposed to negotiate for the purchase of the gas works. They were of opinion that no good could result from a general discussion unless there was something definite to start with.
When the letter was read the Mayor said he could not say upon what basis they could work upon at the proposed conference. The only thing to reply was that the Council had no basis to suggest, but was still willing to meet the directors. It was too early to make any suggestion. He moved to the effect indicated ,and the motion was carried without discussion.
