NEW CENTRAL FIRE STATION.
LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE.
A large number of invitations were issued locally to bo present at the formal laying of the foundation stone of the new Central Fire Station in Cuba street this afternoon. To Mr E. J. Armstrong, chairman of the Firo Beard, fell the distinction of well and truly laying the stone, which is a slab of plain white marble, 2ft 6in long- and 13 mcnes_ wide, and bearing the following inscription: — "P N. Fire Board. This stone was laid February 28th, 1910. by E. J. Armstrong, chairman : members, C. A. Ewen, 11. Ilaydon. J. J. Mallard, J. A. Nash, R. M. Simpson, A. Turner, C. C. Warner, superintendent and secretary; L. G. West, architect; C. W. Blackboum, builder." The Wellington members of the Board were among those present, and after the formal portion of the proceedings had been duly attended to an adjournment was made to the present Firo Station, where afternoon tea and light refreshments were served, and remarks appropriate to the occasion delivered by' the chairman of the Board, the Mayor and others.
