CRICKET.
THE VISIT OF THE AUSTRALIANS. The much-lookcd-for visit of the Australian eleven to Palmerston eventuated to-day, and the match against Manawatu commenced on the Sports Ground at 2.30 this afternoon. The visitors arrived by the mail train from Wellington, were welcomed by Mr D. Buick, M.P., the Mayor, and members of the Cricket Association, and were then driven to Devinc's Empire Hotel, where Ihey were entertained at lunch, after which they were driven to the Sports Ground.
The turf was in excellent condition, if a trifle soft, and if anything the wicket was slightly in the batsmen's favour. Although the weather had promised to be gloriously fine early this morning there were very threatening signs at noon of a shower, and the light was not of the best. A steady westerly wind was also blowing right across the ground, and that added nothing to the enjoyment of the spectators or the interest of the game, although it assisted tho bowlers from the northern end somewhat. The teams arc as follows: — MANAWATU. McLean (captain), Ongley, Trevcna, Mason, (Jobbe, Bartlctt. Wells, O'Connor, Goldspring, Mitchell, Holland, Eyre, Greer. AUSTRALIA. Whitty, Emery, Dodds, Mayne, Bardsley (captnin)_, Kelleway. Warne, D. 1 Smith, Hopkins. Facey, Simpson. THE PLAY. Bardsley won the toss, and sent Manawatu to the wickets. Mitchell and Ongley opened the batting, the former to Whitty. Ho had a brief life, the third ball just snicking his bails before he had opened his scoring account. 0 —1 —0. Trcvena followed and played out tho over. Emery sent down a very short ball to Ongley, who promptly swiped it for 3. amid applause. Trcvena played out the over again without scoring, and then Ongley once more faced Whitty, who sent down a maiden. Trcvena opened his account with a single off Emery's next over, and that brought him face to face once more with Whitty, who took his middle stump with the third ball. — 4—2—l. Goldspring filled the vacancy.
