ASHHURST.
(Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) The Government have decided to pay £1 for £1 towards the cost of strengthening several braces on the Gorge bridge. The Oroua, County Council have voted £5 towards improvements to the Band stand on the reserve, provided the Band raise a like amount. Crs. W. G. Pcaroe and J. H. Vincent have been re-elected members of the Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, representing the residents of the Oroua County. On Monday evening Col. Knight, commander of the North Island, will hold a meeting in the local barracks, when he will give pome of his early experiences in the Army. There will also be a supper. ' Mr J. N. Newton, of Pohangina road, is making extensive improvements to his property. He is erecting a new shed and installing more milking machines, as well as minor improvements. The tenders received yesterday for gravel contracts in the Otangaki Riding were all at a lower price than last season. The lowest prices were as follows: Ashhurst streets and Creamery road, 450 yards, Messrs Thompson and Evans, Is Bj;d per yard; Pohangina road, Is lljd per yard, 400 yards. The lowest, for 250 yards from Haseldene's pit for Spur road was 2s 6d per yard. Mr Lawrence being the successful tenderer.
