NOTES ON THE MANAWATU TEAM

A correspondent supplies the follow ing notes on the representative team:-

Tho Manawtitu team is at last in limelight, and I think Mr Greer is to be congratulated on his. choice, though I do not see eye to eye with him in leaving Mason and Eyre out of the team. When the Australians last visited Palmerston North both of these men showed up prominently, and I can think of nothing to supplant them in favour of Coyne. McKenzie, O'Connor, or Gj. Greer. The team is without a wicketkeeper, and I am sure Ongley and Bartlett will have reason to regret the omission of Bob Eyre, who is the only player here who can bo relied upon to stump effectively.

Trevcna's batting chances are likely to be marred by having his hands damaged at the stumps. He is an excellent out-field, and in my opinion is most useful there. However, the order has gone forth, and it behoves each member of the team to make the most of his time between this and next Wednesday.

Tho following is the personnel of the team: —

Onglcy.—A Feilding player; 6low legbreak bowler; excellent field, and probably the best bat in tho team.

Bartlett.—A United player ; break bowler, faster than Ongley, and comes a lot from the off; best slip in Manawatii; unreliable with the bat; the better the match the better he plays.

G. Greer.—Old Boys ; fast bowler, with swerve from the off; good reliable field, but an indifferent bat; on performances lucky to be in the team.

Wells. —United ; fast to medium-paced bowler; bumps on any wicket, and may be relied upon to do his share of fielding. Represented Otago some years ago: as likely to make runs as anyone picked.

Cobbe.—Feilding; fast bowler ; excellent field, and, with McLean, the best run-getter in Manawatu; first appearance in big cricket. Holland. —Old Boys; fast bowler, erratic at times, but gets wickets if persevered with; stock Wanganui bowler for several seasons; careful bat, but rather unlucky; weak in the field. Goldspring.—United; the pluckiest field in the team; does excellent work close up; forceful bat, and should make runs.

Trevcna. —Feilding; has the best batting average so far in club cricket; a lucky bat, and an excellent out-field; will probably keep wickets where his fielding is good. McLean.—Feilding ; the captain of the team; a good jrcneral. with splendid knowledge of the game; excellent field, and bats well.

Mitchell.—Old Boys; steady bat and excellent field; can turn the ball from either side. *

O'Connor. —United ; excellent long-field and a wristy bat, if allowed to stay at the wickets "for a couple of overs. McKenzie.—Old Boys; reliable bat and good change bowler, with a break from cither side; weak in the field, but nevertheless a useful player.

Coyne.—United; left-hand bat; can be relied on to make runs; a useful man in stopping a rot; might run faster between the'wickets and improve infielding. The Association meets on Friday night at 8.30 p.m. to make final arrangements for tho match, which begins on Wednesday next at 2.30 p.m.
