AUSTRALIA v. NEW ZEALAND. THE FIRST TEST MATCH. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. The first test match began to-day in fine but threatening weather. There was rain overnight, and a drying wicket probably in favour of the bowlers, as the Australians, on winning the toss, sent New Zealand to the wicket. The New Zealand team was as already selected. The Australians omitted Dodds and Facey. Lusk and Siedeberg opened to Whitty and Armstrong's bowling. Play was very slow. At 13 Siedeberg got his leg in front to Whitty. 13—1 —2. Midlane followed, but with one run added was bowled by Armstrong. 14—2 —0. Haddon filled the vacancy, but at 17 tamely hit Whitty to Simpson at mid-off. 17 —3 —l. Reese was next, and hit Whitty to log for four at the first ball. Scores: Lusk, not out, 10; Siedeberg. lbw b Whitty, 2; Midlane, b Armstrong, 0; Hadden, c Simpson, b Whitty 1; Roose, not out, 8; extras, 6; three for 27. Later. I Lusk got Whitty to log for a boundary and Reese treated Armstrong similarly. At 46 Lusk hit Whitty into Emory's hands at point. 46 —4 —22. Sims joined Reese, but Whitty bowled the Now Zeaskipper. 52—5—20. The same bowler got Macfarlane leg-before to his first ball. 52 —6—o. An hour's play had produced 52 runs. Both the Otago men wero given out lbw by Carlton to Whitty, who was bowling left-handed round the wicket. Emery relieved Armstrong after a period of slow play, and Sims got hiiri to leg for four.
