FATAL ACCIDENT IN A MINE.
TWO MEN FALL DOWN THE SHAFT. (Peb Press Association.) WAIHI, March 10. A fatal accident occurred at the Waihi Company's mine whereby J. O'Malley, miner, single, was. killed instantly, and his mate, F. White, a married man, was so seriously injured that he is not expected to live. In company with a miner named Manuel they were in a ladderway at No. 1 shaft, making preparations for the haulage of water and air pipes. At the time of the accident Manuel was attending a winch in an intermediate level when he heard a rush'ing noise in the shaft, which, it transpired, was the men falling down the I shaft, a distance of about 170 feet. It is surmised that one lost his footI ing on the ladderway when in the I act of attaching a tackle block to a bearer, and knocked the other off I in his fall.
