CHARGES AGAINST "TRUTH."
CONVICTION OF THE MANAGER

WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. Before his Honor Mr Justice Chapman, and a jury, Henry Stephen Coburn was convicted, as manager for Truth newspaper, of having knowingly and wilfully distributed copies of that paper on 13th November, 1909, containing obscene printed matter of a tendency to corrupt morals. The charge was laid under the Crimes Act. Mr M. Myers conducted the prosecution, and Mr T. W. "Wilford, with him Mr A. Dunn, appeared for defendant.
In his address to the jury, MiMyers said that this was a ease of very great importance to every man, woman, and child in the community. Persons who prepared literature for public sale should not be allowed to poison the minds of the public. Accused wa6 the manager, and the proprietor or conductor of the paper was not domiciled in New Zealand.
To their verdict of guilty the juryadded a recommendation to mercy on account of the short time accused had been manager and his previous good character.
Sentence was deferred till to-mor-row morning.
