Reports received from Port-au-Prince, the capital of tho Republic of Hayti, bring news of a serious situation. Before daybreak on Sunday last soldiers forced an entry into the houses of a dozen residents of the city, dragged the inmates out, and summarily shot them. This high-handed action, it is stated, was taken by the express order of the Minister of the Interior, General Loconto, who charged the persons shot with being concerned in a conspiracy in favour of General Firmin. Many revolutionary sympathisers have taken refuge in tho French and German Legations, and the Government has submitted a demand for their surrender, alleging that the conspiracy was hatched at the Consulates. Tho French cruiser Destre&s has been ordered to proceed to Gonaives, a porton a bn.y of tho same name, sixty-five miles north-north-west of Port-au-Prince. The German authorities are despatching the cruiser Bremen to the Haytien capital, and the British cruisers (Jrcssy and Indefatigable have also been ordered there from Jamaica. The authorities at Washington consider that the Government of Hayti ought to be allowed to put its house in order without outside interference. Tho Consuls at Gonaives ar,o reported to be trying to arrange for the removal of the refugees from the Legation. Political mattera in Hayti have been in a state of ferment for a long time past. Last year it was alleged that plotting against tho Government was secretly supported by Now York capitalists, and investigations made by detectives on behalf of the Haytien Government were stated a few weeks ago to have strcngthenod this view.
