DOWN THE LINE.

OTAKI, March 16. The annual meeting of the iVlanakau Ladies' Hockey Club was hold on Saturday nitrhr. when the balance-sheet; showed a credit- of £6. It was decided to open the season on Wednesday with a practice game. The following were elected officebearer—President, Mrs T. Bevan, jun.; ■vice-presidents. Mesdames Curtis, R. Bevan, Burnell, Bull, Bacchus; captain, Miss Bird ; secretary. Miss Gerty Houghton. Tho Rev. P. R. Paris was the recipient of a presentation yesterday, a gold pencil-case being given him by his Parapaiaumu congregation. Mr Paris leaves to take up Methodist work at Invcrcargill on April 2nd, and tho "Pram" people wished to show some recognition of his services Tho death is announced at Albury (N.S.W.) of Mrs Moffatt, sister of Mr J. T. Kent, of Rikiorangi. Mrs Wrigley, prior to her departure from Levin, was presented with a nice silver-backed brush and comb by the W.T.U. The local footballers hold a meeting here during the week, but it is doubtful if they will have sufficient members to raise a team. An enquiry into their balance-sheet may elicit tho fact that mam' of last year's members are unfinancial.* What is more, they arc likely to. remain so! Hockey in this district is likely to be. practically dead this season, and, judging by the present enthusiasm, there will be only a ladies' club. Several of the sterner sex are retiring from tho game, and, unfortunately for the remaining members, have been tho workers of tho pa "it season —consequently will be missed. /. game of fisticuffs was indulged here on Saturday night, and after both combatants had been -disfigured to a minor degree, cried enough, and a draw was awarded. Now that a new ranger lias been appointed for this district it is to bo hoped he will keep his oyes open and favour nope. Stock do an immense amount of harm by their peregrinations, and have for some time boon allowed to roam at large. O)ir local tennis players suffered defeat on Saturday at .the hands of the Levin Club by six games to four. Unfortunately, the light interfered considerably with the play, and many games had to be abandoned. The Otaki team was rather a weak combination as far as ladies were concerned, three of the picked ones failing to turn up Mr Byron Brown, with his usual generosity, has offered a site for an Anglican Church, but the vestry have decided not to accept, as they had secured a section previously.
