Alleged Assault at the Stoke School.

NELSON, Oct. 21. _At the Magistrate's Court, William Fitzgerald, a resident master, and John McFadden, schoolmaster at the Stoke Industrial School, were, charged with assaulting George Corfield. an inmate of the school, aged 17£ years, who was at service for some time near Wanganui but who was returned to the school. Corfield deposed that McFadden, after ordering him to stand, shook him by the shirt collar,, and that Fitzgerald struck him with his fist. There was evidence that Corfield swore:atthe master, and that Fitzgerald struck him with his open hand. ' For the defence it was alleged that Corfield was disobedient, and Fitzgerald said he was indiscreet in slapping hid, but he thought it the most satisfactory way of dealing with a'boy of that sort. The charge against McFadden was dismissed, but Fitzgerald was fined 40sand costs £5 Bs.
