Donedin, May 24; At the Supreme Court the second trial took place of James Hogg, charged with having at Balclutha as secretary o f the Dalton Lodge of Oddfellows fraudulently converted to his own .use certain sums received that should have been paid to the Begistrar. The jury returned a verdict of " Not Guilty." Another indictment was read, but the Crown Prosecutor offering no evidence the accused was discharged. ' Wellington, May-24. • Ihe hearing of the libel action, John James Meikle v. New Zealand Times Co., claim £2000 damages, was concluded to-day. Mr Justice Cooper simplified his directions to the jury by quoting the Chief Justice's remarks on " fair comment," by stating that if the jury did hold the publication of an advertisement to be malicious, they would then find for plaintiff without having to consider whether it was fair comment or not. The -jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff with one farthing's damages. The question of costs was reserved for discussion in Chambers.
