AN EXPENSIVE LUXURY.
It will be remembered that without any authority from Parliament the Premier took .with him to the Coronation a contingent of New Zealand Volunteers. Mr' Setldoa was careful enough to make sure that a vote of £1500 was passed for his own expenses, but. lie never suggested either that a Volunteer contingent was to be sent or that a large sum of money should be provided to defray the consequent expense. ,It will come as a surprise, therefore, to the people oi the colony to know that fully £7000 will have to be paid in connection with the visit of the Coronation contingent io the Old Country. Without in any way wishing to be disloyal, we cannot refrain from expressing our disgust with such a waste oi public money ■as has been involved in the matter in question. Of course, it is a fortunate tiling for the Premier that this contingent did go, because he was able to gel '•complimentary" passages for himself and family, free of cost, by travelling on the same steamer as the contingent, although the colony had liberally provided the funds to enable Mr Seddon to pay his way.
