FOXTON MUSICAL CLUB.
A MERITORIOUS CONCERT.
Those who were in 1 attendance at the initial concert submitted by the recently formed musical club in All Saints’ Social Hall on Tuesday evening were treated to a programme of exceptional merit, 'which not only won the unstinted appreciation of the audience but reflected credit upon the conductor (Mr J. B. Macpherson) and those contributing. The concert demonstrated the fact that- Foxton possesses vocal talent of a very high order. The concerted items displayed tone, balance and colour. Particularly was this noticeable in the unaccompanied part song “The Long day Closes.” Other concerted items of equal merit were: “The Soldiers’ Chorus” (Faust); “Funiculi- Funicula” (soloist, Mr IV. M. Thomas) and the humorous part song “Old Mother Hubbard” (which latter was vociferously encored); Madrigal, “All in the Garden Fair”; “Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes” (male voices) and as an encore “Shennandoah” (soloist, Mr D. R. Barron) were other delightful numbers. Miss Gladys Cameron, a talented Palmerston ■ North soprano soloist, was heard to advantage in the numbers “Love is Meant to Make us Glad” and “The Pipes of Pan,” in both of which the soloist was enthusiastically recalled. Mr A. G. Brown, baritone, also of Palmerston North, gave a very finished rendering of his songs, “Lorraine, Lorraine Lorrei” and “The Lute Player,” his rendition of these numbers stamped him as a soloist of outstanding merit and he was accorded undeniable recalls. Mr J. Bailey, the well-known Palmerston North tenor, contributed “In the Garden of Your Heart,” a very fine interpretation. The latter was also associated with Mr Brown in the duet “The Battle Eve.” Mrs Stan Barber and Mr. Macpherson were heard to advantage in the duet “Farewell to Summer” and as an encore “Gome, Sing to Me.” Mrs R. N. Speirs ably officiated as accompanist.
The Rev. Mr Kenney, on behalf of the Dorcas Society, proposed a vote of thanks to the club and assisting artists and made complimentary reference to the quality of the programme. The proceeds were handed over to the Dorcas Society, who subsequently entertained the performers to supper.
