MANAWATU ROWING CLUB.

v ' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Rowing Club was held in Harvey’s Rooms last Thursday evening. Mr R. Bryant presided over a fair attendance of members. The committee’s report for the year stated that though there had been a fair amount of progress during the year, more could have been hoped for, lack of finance being a big handicap.

During the season coaching was carried out amongst the novices and several showed an enthusiasm and an aptitude for the sport, ft was unfortunate that the club had lost the services of a number of members who had been transferred from, the district. During the year one double sculler and a set of sculls were purchased from the Wanganui Club and these proved well worth the money expended. The committee would like to see, du ring the forthcoming season, the purchase of two boats of a similar type so that club racing could be inaugurated. Two such boats have been offered to the club by the Union Boat Club, Wanganui, for the nominal sum of ,C 5. The Union states that the boats are not in the best of condition and the necessary repairs to the two boats and the. freight for conveying them to Foxton would bring the total cost to the vicinity of £lB. This amount is at present beyond our finances, but the boats would be cheap at the price. During the year, owing to the encroachment of the river, a number of piles were washed away from the boat shed which was in danger of falling into the river. New piles were placed in position and protective measures carried out, but more work is necessary in this direction.

The question of affiliation with the Wanganui Rowing Club must be gone into as this is necessary before members can compete at regattas. The affiliation fee is £1 1/- ami ip) to 2/0 per member per season. The 2/0 will not necessarily he levied on this club for a start. The Union Boat Club, Wanganui, lias generously offered the use of a boat in the event of any loc-al crews competing at the Wanganui regatta. The balance sheet shows a credit of £S 2/21, which in the light of the amount expended during the year, is satisfactory. The election of officers resulted as follows:

President: Mr R. Bryant; vicepresident: Air E. Jackson; club captain: Air W. .J. Anderson; secretary and treasurer: Mr L. Mattar; coach: Air T. C'rotty; auditor: Air J. Christie; committee: Messrs AI. Baird and .1. Purcell and officers ex officio.

Arising from the report it was decided to affiliate with the Wanganui Rowing Association and 1 that purchase of new boats he deferred till a later meeting.

The balance sheet was adopted subject to audit. The resignation of Mr E. T. Wilson was accented with regret and a vote of thanks accorded him for his services. Mr Wilson has been transferred to Shannon but hopes to spend week ends at Foxton and enjoy a row on the river. Two new members were elected.

The meeting concluded with a vote, of thanks to the chair and to Mr Harvey for the use of his rooms.
