The death took place at Otaki on Monday of Mr. Leslie Skerman, ,one of Otaki’s best known residents, aged 65 years. A widow and grown-up family' are left to mourn their loss.

Mr. J. Lowden, Inspector of Factories at Palmerston North, will shortly retire. Mr. Lowden, prior to joining the Government service in 1915, was for 32 years foreman of a boot factory and later for a period with another Dunedin firm. He transferred to the Government 'service in the capacity of footwear expert and was stationed at Dunedin for a short time prior to being ’ transferred to Christchurch. Then followed a transfer to the West Coast, while 10 years ago_ lie came north to Palmerston North to take charge of the Labour Department office and now retires as a result of liis having reached the retiring age. The death has occurred in the Greytown Hospital of Mr. John Daysh, aged 91, who arrived in Wellington with his parents in June, 1841, and had lived in the Wairarapa for the past 74 years. .He had a family of five boys and live girls, of whom seven are still living, while there are 49 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and one of the fifth generation of his descendants. Up till a week before his death Mr. Daysh had all his faculties unimpaired and was hale and hearty. His father, the late Mr. John Daysh, died at the age of 95.

Members of the Presbyterian Church and 1 * adherents will regret to learn of tbe early departure of the Rev. J. A. E. Preston from Foxton. Mr. Preston has received notice of his transfer to Scargill, in North. Canterbury and next Sunday will be his last appearance in the local pulpit. . Since his residence in Foxton Mr. Preston has taken a keen interest in both the spirtiual and physical welfare of the young people connected with the church. Last season be formed a youths’ cricket clnb. which carried off the season’s honours. He is also a keen Rugby enthusiast and his familiar figure among the spectators will be missed next season. As President of the Presbyterian Women’s Social Guild, Mrs Preston’s departure will be regretted. It is expected that Mr. and Mrs Pi’eston will leave for their new sphere of work early next week.
