ONE BIG UNION.

Among the private members' Bills which came before the House to-day was an amendment to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration • Act proposed by Mr Savage (Auckland Central) the principal clans© of which so light to make it possible to register one union for the whole- of New Zealand in any trade, industry, or calling. Mr Savage suggested that this was necessary to keep pace with industrial development. He moved the- second rending, and that the Bill be. referred to the Labor Bills Conn iidttee. Sir William Hcrries, Minister for Labor, expressed satisfaction at the proposal to have the Bill reviewed by the committee. Otherwise, he would oppose it, because the principal clause aimed at the one big union idea. Mr Howard: "No; one union one industry."' The Minister declared that the Government strongly opposed the principle. "So long us this Government is on these benches,"'lie said, "it intends to govern.'' Mr Holland: "But we will get rid of you some day."—(Laughter). Sir William Herries: "You have to get rid of us first, but you would then be the Government, and you wouldn't let anyone dictate to you. There cannot lie two Goyerment's in the country, a,nd so far as we are concerned while we are here we intend to govern."'
