LOCAL BUTTER SUPPLIES.
The Prime Minister indicated, in reply to a question in the House, that the. Government proposed to continue the sys>m which enabled New Zealand consumers of butter -ik) secure supplies at a reasonable' price without doing injustice to the producers.
Mr Massey said that the Treasury estimated that tho cost of continuing the subsidy system for butter would %oo £200,000 a year, as the consumption of butter had greatly increased. The Imperial Government had purchased the New Zealand output of butter until-July 31st >vt 181s per cwt., .-which, would not allow sales to New Zealand consumers at tli.e present retail price without the payment of an allowance, equal to twopence per pound by the Government. It appeared tolerably certain that the price, of butter to ext season in England would be higher than at present, and in considering' the local, price allowance must be made for Pfd per lb, which, was the. jc-oRt of getting the butter into the ...hands .of- the English iiohsumer. • , i
The Minister 'for Customs informed another.,question-er ■" that wh&n the English butter purchase ended: there would bo no objection to removing tho embargo on the postage of butter to .England. • -i j
