A SUCCESSFUL ENTERPRISE

A . correspondent writes:-—The Can■vastown Patriotic Society were mifori iiiato in meeting with a wet day for their jumble sale in aid of the Wf *ide<l Soldiers Fund on Saturday, ApvA loth. However, as there was a lot of perishable goods to be sold, the eon mittee decided to go on with the sata on Saturday, and to sell what was lelt over on the following Tuesday night. \■. \ ■ T!i3 v eather cleared up somewhat in the evening and the hall was fairly well filled.

A number of competitions were exten, led over the two nights. The resuic of Saturday's effort amounted to over £58. A bullock given bj Mr A. Ward was sold in joints, tii » realised £12. A beautiful night on Tuesday sa\v the hall again well filled \vt\ a crowd who were evidently out to help the foovs who are fighting for them. Great credit is dye to Mr E. F. Healy, who has the happy knack of drawing the floating cash from, the people in. the shape of bids. A loaf of broad was sold and re-sold until it realised £5 2s 4d. . A cushion made by ?vliss Geary brought £5; a fivedecker wedding cake made by Miss I>aHon £10 11s; a doll given by Mrs ■Gcvi'v £9 19s 6d; and a horse given by Mr F. Gardiner £10 2s 6d.
