Reports from China state that the modernisation of the Chinese army into an ever-ready fighting body of 36 divisions may be completed before the expiration o ftbe five years which it was thought the task wdnld take. At present there are 12 divisions fully trained and up-to-date in every way while 10 more are expected to reach the same degree of efficiency in a comparatively short time. It may be considered that China at the present time has a modern' army of* 200,000' men.
