! The Blenheim Borough Council met : last night, the members present be- . ng: The Mayor (Ms E. H. Penny), i and Councillors R. F.fiddle B. 1 Adams, W. Carr, F. W. Dodson, E S. Parker, J. J. Whits, and F. Birch. TENDERS. Several tenders were received for removing the hedge from the south ' side of Seymour Square,, and that of :W. Binley, of £7 10s, was accepted. 1 For gravelling Alabama Road the i tender of Fitzgerald and McNamara, of 16s per chain, was accepted. MAIN STREET DRAINAGE. Councillor Adams moved: '|That the Foreman report on the drainage !of the Main Street district into the Opawa River." He pointed out that this was a bad spot, and that most of the sections were under water during the wet season, and caused the spread of diphtheria. It was absolutely necessary that this locality should be drained1, and he hoped that the Council would give effect to his motion. The Town Clerk read a report from the inspector on this question, which stated that the property mentioned could be drained effectively for £120. The Mayor asked how it would be if the Council had to go through any private property. The Inspector said that they would to go through only Mr Pike's property. Councillor Carr seconded the motion, stating that he felt sure that Mr Pike would meet the Council fairly, and even if he did not he thought the Council should do the work. Councillor Parker said there would be no difficulty with Mr Pike, as the drainage would benefit him more than anyone else. , He was pleased that Councillors Carr and Adams had suggested the erection of a. flood-gate in the protective bank. He remembered that, when a proposal was made to do this in connection with another part 1 of the town they had, as members of the River Board, strongly opposed it. Circumstances no doubt cases. He thought .that the Omaka Road Board-should'"be made to contribute towards the cost of this work. Councillor Witfen suggested that this. matter should be,, referred to. the. > Works iCWniittceforf.-^ r^porjb. . 'r ;■ ".; ' ."'' .'■ '. ■' vThe Mayor thought that Councillor Adams should allow the matter to go . to the Works Committee. Councillor Adams agreed-to this, , but thought it would not be right to ask the Omaka Road Board to pay anything towards this work. Tbo Mayor said ho'understood that the suggestion was only to obtain the ■'Omaka; Board's permission to cross their roads. - Councillor Birch thought that the Omaka Road Board should pay, because he firmly believed that that body would benefit greatly from' this work. Councillor Carr hoped the motion would go through, because the work was urgent. It was agreed that, provided the Omaka Road Board consented to the Council passing over their roads, and that the Lower Wairau River Board pay for the cost of the flood-gate, and that Mr Pike agreed to allow the Council to go through, his, property, the work be proceeded with. The Council rose at 10.15 p.m.
