"THE YANKEE DETECTIVE."

This is the title of the comedy drama to be staged lay the popular Phil Walsli Dramatic Company, who appear at the Town Hall on Tuesday, .November Bth. The following extract from a contemporary speaks for itself.: —

"A story of gripping interest was that-unravelled at the Theatre Royal last night by the Phil "Walsh, Dramatic .Company when they put on 'The 'Yankee Detective.,' a comedydrama^ founded or. the sensational theft of the Tavistock diamonds. The sceiie.of the theft- ?/as New York (Dity^: arid.- i:he" details were planned anil* carried- out in true American style. Ladj Tavistock, a widow, is dragged by a young lady who is in the employ of the Hon. Guy Ballington, head of the famous Black Hand gang, and this same young lady afterwards impersonates her, the real Lady Tavistock, who loses her sight and her reason temporarily, being kept in charge of an accomplice of the gang. But Shadow Keen, chief of the detective force, comes on the scene, and in his search for the missing diamonds ancT the thieves many sensational situations arise, the I last scene in the drama witnessing ! the capture of the thief and the break-up of the Black Hand gang. As the man who makes all the mis- | chief Mf Stuart Mcßae was dejcidedly good, playing the unpopular I role of villain in a neat and clever | way. The popular Phil Walsh, as the | Yankee Detective, again' proved himjself an actor of no mean merit. To run the villain to earth he had to be a man of many parts—a waiter, > a German pedlar, a Scottish chaperon, and a detective—and his acting throughout was marked by that finish which characterises the true man of the stage. The dignified Lady Tavistock could not have been better represented than she was by Miss "Eva Marius Paigne, whose admirable stage presence and powerful acting earned for her many complimentary references." The box plan is now open at Holeroft's.
