PERSONAL.

' Mr A. W. Hall, the New Zealand flaxniill manager, who has been engaged for the past three years in establishing the milling of New Zealand hemp at ; St. Helena, has returned to the Dominion. Mr Hall speaks in gratifying terms of his treatment by the' island authorities and of his life at St. Helena. He had the unique experience of sleep-' ing for three nights in Napoleon's library at Longwood.

The death of Mr William F. Poole removes another old resident of the city (states the Nelson Mail). For a great many years Mr Poole carried on the business of a locksmith—in Cbllingwood Street, in Hardy Street, and lastly in Bridge Street. For the past few months the family had resided in Wainui Street. The late Mr Poole was one of the oldest members of Court Robin Hood, A.0.F., and he has held the office of District Beadle for a long period. The widow and family will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

With reference to the report which has been recently published regarding the betrothal of Miss Evangeline Booth (commander of the Salvation Army's forces in the United States) and Dr. Wilbur Chapman (the wellknown American missioner), the following denial of the engagement by Dr. Chapman is of interest. Dr. Chapman, with Mr Alexander, is at the present time conducting a mission in Gerat Britain, and, when interviewed ,in Cardiff on the subject, he gave a very emphatic denial to the report. "There is not a worjl of truth in it," he said, "and I wish you could send my denial to America as well. There could be nothing further from the truth. My answer is 'No, absolutely no.' The report does a great injustice to Miss Booth. She is doing the greatest work of any woman in the United States, and she would do herself an injustice to become engaged to any man. She has a greater position as the leader of the Salvation Army in the United States than she could get by becoming the wife of any man living."
