Other changes in the Public Service are that Mr J. E. Smith, late Registrar of Old-Age Pensions, succeeds Colonel Gudgeon at the Cook Islands. Mr Campbell, late head of the Valuation Department, becomes manager of the State Fire Insurance Department. .. Public Health is incorporated with Internal Affairs. Dr. Mason is to_go Home for a year on a special mission to inquire into complaints about frozen meat and examine immigrants. The Secretary for Agriculture takes over the Tourist Department, with Mr Robieson, formerly chief clerk, in charge. The Prime Minister says that already £187,000 per annum-will be saved in remodelling the departments, and the full amount, a quarter of a million, will be realised in the end. The names of men retired, he added, would not be published, and they would not be turned off in the winter, but notices would be sent to them.

The Hon. T. Mackenzie becomes Minister for Agriculture to-day. The Prime Minister retains the portfolio of Lands.
