NEW RAILWAY STATIONS.

WiNTED ALL OVER THE DOMINION.

BUT CANNOT BE GRANTED

[PRE 33 ASSOCIATION.]

CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. Replying to a deputation at Leeston yesterday, the Hon. Mr Millar said that it was not the intention of the Railway department to build elaborate railway stations throughout the railway system. What was essential was ample platform and office accommodation. Requests for new stations were being received from all over the Dominion, but the cost must be met out of revenue. Only a certain amount was available unless a loan were raised, and. the money had to be distributed over the whole system. He would not dream of building stations at Lincoln or Doyleston out of one year's revenue. Seeing the number of new stations needed, one in a year on that line ■would be good work. Over the whole of New Zealand only four or five stations would be replaced during the current year. It was impossible to do more owing to the restriction of •expenditure to moneys from revenue. He could easily spend one million this year on the renewal of stations and yards, but his desire was bounded by the funds available.
