NEW STEAMER SERVICE.

BETWEEN LONDON AND QUEENSLAND.

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received Sept. 11, 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 10

Before leaving London for Brisbane, Mr Kidston completed arrangements with the British India Steamship Company for a steamer service via Torres Straits.

The company is to receive a subsidy of £37,000, and provide a thirty-five days' service between London and Thursday Island. Steamers will run monthly, commencing in October, and will call at Cairns, Townsville, Port Aiwa and any other port which" offers one hundred and fifty tons of cargo, returning via the Cape.

Uniform freight rates will charged from Queensland ports.

The steamers engaged in the service will be of 5500 tons register.
